cholestrol, body fat index and BMI?? hi everyone, I am confused about soemthing. My cholestrol level is HDL 36 on a 35-80 reference range LDL 67 on 0-110 reference range My fat index is 36% BMI is 23. Shouldnt I have a lesser fat index % considering my cholestrol level? dont they both tell you the same thing in different readings? Also my doc. says i should only be concerned about my BMI which is fine. BUt i am really worried about my fat index which wouldnt lessen no matter how hard i workout and control my carb intake. Anyway, how does the mechanism of the fat index measuring devices work? Are they reliable? Can you explain what fat index vs cholestrol level is? thanx

Body Mass Index or %? What is the body mass and fat % of somebody at 5'9'' and 160 lbs.
What matters most? Body Mass Index or Body Fat Percentage? My BMI is 28.69, borderline obese. My weight should be, according to this, between 105 and 141. An online test said 120-125 would be a good goal weight, as did my doctor (basing things off my BMI). My BFP is 27.5%, meaning 117.5lbs of my body weight is lean weight and 44.6lbs is fat. The person administering the test (done at the gym) said my goal weight should be 135lbs. So, knowing that the doctor's goal weight is only 3-8lbs over my lean body mass, wouldn't that be too thin? What matters more? BMI or BFP? (and yes, I know I should lose weight either way, and I am doing so with diet and regular exercise)
what is the fastest way to lose 40 pounds? i have been setting records in swimming for 4 years with a huge fatty body. i was curious how much faster i would go if i lost 40 pounds. i want to lose the weight as fast as possible so i can break another record. maybe a water diet??? remember, i has to be the FASTEST way possible (2 - 4 months) i am currently 6' 2'' and 205lbs. i am 14 years old so this huge weight thing is getting annoying. btw, my body fat index is like 15%
A question about body weight, muscle weight, water weight and fat loss.? I know muscle weighs more than fat. As I continue to loose fat I'm also gaining muscle which weighs more than fat. Water might fluctuate my weight a little day to day, but it will be temporary loss or temporary gain. At some point, when I have more muscle than fat (my body fat index is low right now but lean muscle measurements are not where I want it to be yet) how will I know what's muslce weight, what's fat weight, what's water weight and how much fat is still to be lost?

What percentage body fat should I carry? I'm a 34 year old male, with a body mass index of 22.3...According to the electrical impedence method, my body fat is 16%. What should be my "target" body fat?
How do I burn extra skin off of my body? I am 14 1/2, 5'8" and 128 lbs. 2 years ago I was 5'6" and 144lbs. I have definitly lost some body fat, and thinned out a bit. My body mass index is now about 19.7, which I am told is pretty good. My problem is that I still have a lot of skin left over from my baby fat- I can pull up to 2 inches of skin from any part of my torso, which is absolutely gross. It''s also odd that thought from the side I have a flat figure, I have saggy skin (and muscle around my breasts, giving them awful features. I started a low-fat, low-sodium no snack food diet about 3 weeks ago, and have been doing about 30 good push-ups, some abdominal exercising and some upper-body training every day, and though I've gained a bit of muscle, I've lost little fat and skin. What's a solution?
Weight-lifting, bulk-gaining, fat-burning question.? Basically, I was about 165 lbs. ( 6' 2" ) when I started working out, now after a couple months I'm about 180 lbs., but I still have a fairly "uncut" ab region and some general "looseness" about me still. I want to shoot for about 190, 195 lbs. and then trim down the fat from there, as most experts would recommend. My question is, If I were to run about 6 miles a day (-800 calories or so) and burn off another 200 cals or so doing other stuff, would It be possible to bulk up muscle (With a 3000 cal. diet with protein, fiber, good carbs) while having the exercise actually burn the fat on me? I don't know what my body-fat index is, I think it's about 7 or 8% right now.

Why do you have to give up caffeine when you start body building or toning up and weight loss? When I start new programs for body toning and weight loss, they usually provide a diet. These diets always tell you to stop caffeine completely. Why? I went to curves, dropped 2 sizes, but my fat index remained the same. They asked if drank caffeine. Yes!
is the BMI(body mass index) a joke? because i could be a body builder with huge abs and strong wide shoulder and weight 250 pounds and be 6 foot 3 inches and a bmi would say I'm over weight but yet my percentage of fat could be 1.2. Is the BMI a joke.

Re body fat calculation: Most health/fitness centres and gyms will use an electrical impedence device (like standing on a set of scales), to measure this. e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Body-Fat-Counters/b?ie=UTF8&node=10706751 Other methods usually involve detailed caliper measurements of pinched skin folds in a set of body locations, combined with your height and mass measurements. e.g. http://www.brianmac.co.uk/fatcent.htm General points: Online calculators are notoriously inaccurate. Body Mass Index outdated? It seems that Body Mass Index is outdated and not very accurate either. It does not really take into account frame size (only very generally ie small, medium, large frame), it does not take into account body measurements or muscle mass. Although my BMI is fine, when I calculated my actual body fat using an online body fat calulator, I found my body fat could be reduced to make it more ideal. What is the point of this outdated Body Mass Index, giving people an innaccurate idea of their true body fat composition?

Why people in this country are fat? Obesity involves having an abnormally high proportion of body fat. Doctors define obesity as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher and overweight as having a BMI of 25 or higher. Weight is largely determined by how you balance your intake of calories from food with the energy you use in everyday activities. If you consume more calories than you use, you gain weight. Your body stores calories that you don't need for energy as fat. Fat is important for storing energy and insulating your body, among other functions. The human body can handle carrying some extra fat, but beyond a certain point, body fat can begin to interfere with your health. Eating too many calories and not getting enough physical activity are the main causes of obesity, especially in combination. But many factors can contribute to obesity.

What is a good workout routine to lose belly fat AND tone the abs? And how long would I start to see results? I'm an Asian female, 5'0'', 100lbs, 22yrs old, 30% body fat index. I just recently started working out EVERYDAY for the past two weeks doing cardio for 30-40 mins and then 30-40 mins of weight training. I'm toned everywhere except my stomach area, love handles, and lower back which is why my BFI is so high (near clinically obese according to medical doctors!) I know working out takes patience but I get the feeling that I'm not executing my workout routine correctly nor efficiently. I don't want to invest in a personal trainer bc I think it wastes money but I might have to resort to it if all else fails. Please help!
Why is the emphasis always on losing weight..should it not be fat? Everywhere you look you are told that it's bad to be over weight as defined by these body mass index charts...Why are we not told to reduce fat instead of weight? Anybody with a reasonable muscle mass is going to be technically over weight even if their body fat percentage is low.

High heartbeat.. and Body Mass Index. How to lower them? I don't mean offense to anyone here, but I'm not obese. I'm 160lbs, and nearly 6feet 2inches. I played Varsity soccer the last two school years (excluding this one), but have not worked out or done any sports this year. Even when in sports, my heartbeat was higher than it should have been. I want to say it was about 140bpm (beats per minute) after running, but I can't be sure. Also, I've found that after walking to class between passing periods my heart beats fast. I don't know if BMI (body mass index.... which I think is the percent of fat in ones body) has anything to do with it, but mine is something like 22% as of last summer, which I know is bad for a guy. But since my heartbeat is a bit higher than average, I'm hesitant to just try and run off this extra body mass... any sound advice?

Body Mass Index - I need a question answered regarding my physical size.? I am currently 216 pounds and 6 foot and 1/2 inch. This puts my BMI at 29.3. Almost in the obese category. I do have a "gut", but I do not appear obese. In order to get into the "normal" BMI range, I'd have to get down to 185 pounds or less. I agree that I should be around that value, however, it's just BARELY in the normal range. I have a larger frame with very wide shoulders. If I were to get into the middle of the normal BMI range, I'd have to weight like 165 pounds. This would be absolutely rediculous for me. That's what I weighed in high school and I was a puny rail. Is there a better system that you can do at home to get a better indication of your fat level? I'm not an athlete, but I don't have hardly any fat anywere but my gut. I think I would actually have to lose muscle in order to get down to that weight. Any ideas for a better test (more comprehensive) that I can do at home? Thanks!
Body Mass Index (BMI? I've gone to many different online BMI calculators but almost each time I get different answers. Why is that? What's the best BMI online calculator? Is there some other tool to use to calculate fat and such?
Weight training to loose fat percentage? I found out just two weeks ago that I am 36.3% fat! I am only 13lbs over the IDEAL weight for my height and age and it is all around my hip! And it is not the hipbone! lol I have 10weeks to loose the extra lbs. I am exercising every day with 3 consecutive days of 20 minutes cardio and intensive weight training exercises for lower body, upper body and back and one day of cardio and stretches then repeat the same exercises. I have done it for two weeks but I have only lost less than half a pound! And my fat index has gone up by 0.3%! My life is pretty much sedentary as I am working from home sitting in front of my pc almost all day long. Still, I am working out everyday! My diet is very healthy and I have cut hugely on my oil consumption, which I think is responsible for the fat hanging around my hip! Now I am having second thoughts if this is the right exercise for me. Even though I don’t want to see the extra lbs on the scale, I am more worried about my fat index. Any advice? also, does weight loss mean losing only the fat or it could also include loosing important muscles as well?

Interesting article "Thin people might be fat on the inside" no question here...? Internal fat around organs can increase diabetes and heart risks The Associated Press Updated: 12:03 p.m. PT May 11, 2007 LONDON - If it really is what’s on the inside that counts, then a lot of thin people might be in trouble. Some doctors now think that the internal fat surrounding vital organs like the heart, liver or pancreas — invisible to the naked eye — could be as dangerous as the more obvious external fat that bulges underneath the skin. “Being thin doesn’t automatically mean you’re not fat,” said Dr. Jimmy Bell, a professor of molecular imaging at Imperial College, London. Since 1994, Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat. According to the data, people who maintain their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits of internal fat, even if they are otherwise slim. “The whole concept of being fat needs to be redefined,” said Bell, whose research is funded by Britain’s Medical Research Council. Without a clear warning signal — like a rounder middle — doctors worry that thin people may be lulled into falsely assuming that because they’re not overweight, they’re healthy. “Just because someone is lean doesn’t make them immune to diabetes or other risk factors for heart disease,” said Dr. Louis Teichholz, chief of cardiology at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, who was not involved in Bell’s research. Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores — a standard obesity measure that divides your weight by the square of your height — can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside. Of the women scanned by Bell and his colleagues, as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25) actually had excessive levels of internal fat. Among men, the percentage was nearly 60 percent. Relating the news to what Bell calls “TOFIs” — people who are “thin outside, fat inside” — is rarely uneventful. “The thinner people are, the bigger the surprise,” he said, adding the researchers even found TOFIs among people who are professional models. According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are essentially on the threshold of being obese. They eat too many fatty, sugary foods — and exercise too little to work it off — but they are not eating enough to actually be fat. Scientists believe we naturally accumulate fat around the belly first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere. Still, most experts believe that being of normal weight is an indicator of good health, and that BMI is a reliable measurement. “BMI won’t give you the exact indication of where fat is, but it’s a useful clinical tool,” said Dr. Toni Steer, a nutritionist at Britain’s Medical Research Council. Unhealthy skinny people Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of internal fat, but some suspect it contributes to the risk of heart disease and diabetes. They theorize that internal fat disrupts the body’s communication systems. The fat enveloping internal organs might be sending the body mistaken chemical signals to store fat inside organs like the liver or pancreas. This could ultimately lead to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, or heart disease. Experts have long known that fat, active people can be healthier than their skinny, inactive counterparts. “Normal-weight persons who are sedentary and unfit are at much higher risk for mortality than obese persons who are active and fit,” said Dr. Steven Blair, an obesity expert at the University of South Carolina. For example, despite their ripples of fat, super-sized Sumo wrestlers probably have a better metabolic profile than some of their slim, sedentary spectators, Bell said. That’s because the wrestlers’ fat is primarily stored under the skin, not streaking throughout their vital organs and muscles. The good news is that internal fat can be easily burned off through exercise or even by improving your diet. “Even if you don’t see it on your bathroom scale, caloric restriction and physical exercise have an aggressive effect on visceral fat,” said Dr. Bob Ross, an obesity expert at Queen’s University in Canada. Because many factors contribute to heart disease, Teichholz says it’s difficult to determine the precise danger of internal fat — though it certainly doesn’t help. “Obesity is a risk factor, but it’s lower down on the totem pole of risk factors,” he said, explaining that whether or not people smoke, their family histories and blood pressure and cholesterol rates are more important determinants than both external and internal fat. When it comes to being fit, experts say there is no short-cut. “If you just want to look thin, then maybe dieting is enough,” Bell said. “But if you want to actually be healthy, then exercise has to be an important component of your lifestyle.”
