How does a body fat scale read your body fat? How can it tell the difference between fat and muscle?

- u mean like a bmi scale, it doesnt. its just a generic estimate. if you want to know for real ask your doctor to do a test to determine your percentage bodyfat.
- Excellent question!!! You know..i heard once that the ONLY true measure of your body fat is via the body-fat composition analysis with the callipers and they put you in water and measure you that way. I think those machines CAN NOT tell the difference and are a waste of money.
- those scales use bioelectical impeadance to measure body fat. unfortunately the models sold to consumers are usually a lot less accurate than the models used by professionals due to the cost. they are better used as a gauge to measure an increase or decrease in body fat vs obtaining a very accurate measurement of the current body fat. you can get some hand calipers on the Internet for $20 and track your body fat with them.
