Did I harm My Baby By Using a Body Fat Scale?
My husband got a new scale and it's one of the fancy ones that calcualte your body fat also, by passing an electric current through your body. Well, I stepped on it to see how I'm doing as far as proper weight gain and it told me my body fat, although at this point I know it doesn't matter. Anyways, I was reading through the manual and it says that pregnant women should not use due to the current. If I only stepped on it once, what are the chances that I did harm to my baby?

- Very slim - don't go on it again but they have to put those warning on in case some dummy stands on it for 3 hours...heck they have warnings on hair dryers that say "don't use while sleeping" after all. The current is so mild - you can't even feel it - it less than an static electricity shock. If you feel nervous, ask the doc - there is no reason for you to be fretting for the next few months.
- Holy crap.. I didn't know they sent electric currents through your body. I weigh myself on one of those everyday... though I don't check my BMI, I just stand on it to get my weight. Does that send currents through your body, also? :(
- you're baby is fine, don't worry...if the manual says not to use it, then don't...they prob don't have evidence/research to back up the negative effects on pregnant women, they probably say it for liability reasons in case something did happen, just don't do it again just to be safe.
- No, the current did not harm your baby. The concern is with the current causing preterm labor. Which is also why some say to avoid heating pads, and electric blankets as well. I don't think that stepping on the scale that one time is going to send you into labor. Hope you feel better :-) take care!
