i bought a cheap handheld body-fat % calculator from wal-mart for $13...i workout or run everyday?

and i have detailed abs and absolutely no visible fat on my body.....however, when i use it it tells me my body-fat% is 26%!? i'm 180 5'11" and have no pudge on my belly or anywhere else at all. i also used it on my roomate who is overweight and it returned nearly the exact same reading? is this thing a piece of crap or what? i just don't get it, i've only been called skinny in my life and this thing tells me i'm overweight and full of fat...it's depressing as hell :(

  1. yeah it's messed up. you usually have to be around at least 10% to have detailed abs.
  2. Even if you weren't very athletic, that doesn't sound right. When they corresponded BMI with body fat percentage, they found the average male (non athletic) with a BMI of 18.5% to 24.9% had between 12%-22% body fat. The predicted body fat percentage for your weight/height is around 22%. So unless you either have a smaller frame or have lost muscle due to lack of exercise or crash dieting, it is probably lower than 26%. Now, depending on how athletic you are, that figure could be much lower than the predicted 22%. Maybe as low as 10% if you are very muscular. These devices aren't always very accurate, especially for more athletic individuals. My husband is 185lb and 6ft2. Using a body fat scale, it told him his body fat was 24%, when he has been professionally measured with callipers and is actually around 10%-12% body fat. I'd have your body fat percentage tested professionally if you are worried. HTH : )
  3. those devices are not accurate. the calculations that are used to program the chips are still based on statistical information. get yourself some basic hand held skin fold calipers.
  4. Eat nourishing food with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables being part of it. Chew each morsel at least 32 times. This will activate signal to the brain as soon as u have had enough. Besides this change in eating style, take regular light exercises and brisk walks every day. U will be able to gain/shed all extra weight gracefully and in a reasonable time span. No food or drink in between the food and not more than three meals a day, unless u r diabetic. AFTER ALL, 1 % INCREASE IN WEIGHT ONLY MEANS MARGINAL INCREASE IN FAT CONTENT, SAY 4%. B/W WHAT R THE INPUTS FOR GETTING THE RESULTS.
