- I'm not sure why you're looking to go so low in your bodyfat, especially at this age. Typically, bodybuilders achieve this through a process called ketosis, utilizing periodized or cyclic ketogenic diets. This is not to be confused with Atkins, which also is a ketogenic diet but is pretty unhealthy in the long term (actually, most ketogenic diets are pretty unhealthy in the long term). Ketosis is the state in which the body utilizes bodyfat stores for energy instead of glucose. Bodyfat is transformed in to ketones, a fatty acid. Since the body actually prefers ketones to glucose anyway, it's not hard to maintain this state if properly applied. The trick is to maintain muscle mass while burning bodyfat while in ketosis. You have to strike a balance between calories from fat and the amount of protein you take in a day - too much protein can be converted to glucose for energy, at which point ketosis stops. Too little fat means not enough energy for building or maintaining muscle. Ketosis works well for those who have some muscle mass to work with. The less muscle mass, the harder it is to maintain ketosis. Also, some people have issues with the high cholesterol of ketogenic diets. Finally, a state called ketoacidosis can occur in those with low insulin tolerance and diebetics, and can actually result in death. This is because glycogons cannot be produced fast enough to halt insulin reduction, so too many ketones enter the blood and the pH is lowered to dangerous levels. A thing to remember is to make sure you get enough fiber in your diet (without taking too many carbs) to keep plumbing moving. This process is called cutting in the bodybuilding world. Most bodybuilders use thermogenic supplements to help aid the cutting. You'll have to determine for yourself what is helpful in these regards.
- I take it you are male. Yes, 15% body fat is healthy, ideal in fact. 5% is too low. HTH : )
