Is 39% Body Fat Underweight Possible ?

I've spent the last 3-4 years extremely inactive. Part of this is because I do work at home, the others are personal. In any event, I've spent a good deal of 90% of that time inactive. I'm very underweight -- about 115lbs at 5'11 and 19 years. My scale has a body fat % calculator (it just asks me for my age and height). I don't understand how it figures it out, but it does. It has me listed at 39% body fat. My friend says there is no way that is possible, but I am not so sure considering I've done little to nothing to maintain any real muscle on my body. Is this wrong, or is it really a realistic possibility? Keep in mind a woman with poor body fat is over 30%, and a man with poor body fat is around over 25% (or there about).

  1. I don't think so...
  2. It is possible if you have very little muscle
  3. Yeah that machine is broke. Figure 40% of your weight, so 46 pounds roughly is pure lard/fat. NO WAY. If you take that away you'd weight79 pounds and at 5'11" you'd be dead. Machine is broke.
  4. im only 13% body fat but i am very muscular.. yes it could be possible if you were EXTREMELY inactive for 4 years cause you haven't built up any muscle
  5. Not at all possible. A normal weight for that height would be 160 pounds. Don't believe the scale!
  6. 39% is not bad at all thats great out standing even! You weight as much as I do.And thats a perfect weight!
  7. consumer devices that use bioelectrical impedance to measure body fat are extremely inaccurate. your body fat is probably 1/2 that. get some hand calipers and learn to take accurate body fat readings. only $8 at the site below http://www.heartratemonitorsusa.com/Pages/CALIPERS/fitness-2000.html
