Body fat - is this healthy?
My body fat percentage is estimated to be around 9%. For someone looking to improve their fitness and perhaps get into boxing, would that be considered good or should I think about trying to lower it? And if I should lower it, what's the best way of doing it?

- healthy? definetly...having a low amount of body fat not only protects you from glucose metabolism disorders but it decreases the chances of getting several types of cancer. the body fat % has no direct effect on athletic performance. if you are truly at 9% body fat you would have a well defined 6-pack that can be seen with out flexing the abs.
- Seems a bit low, but I don't think it's a problem. 10-15% might be better for boxing. You need fat to protect your organs from punches.
- er, i thought that 9% was too low... obviously too low, check out : http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/body_weight/body_fat/percentage.htm
- My BMI says I'm risk of heart attack, but, I'm muscley and fit. How can you go on Height, age and weight. You cant. Simple.
- Your bodyfat level of 9% is probably the envy of many folks! That is a GREAT bodyfat level!!! Consider that bodybuilders shoot for 5 to 7% bodyfat for contests and you get an idea of just how lean you are! I would recommend working on gaining lean muscle mass through strenght training to improve your power as a boxer and continue to do cardio for the stamina you'll need. One of the best cardios recommended for fighters...boxers, wrestlers, MMA fighters....is the 1/3 track program. It entails going to a 1/4 mile track, marking it off in thirds, then walking 1/3, jogging 1/3, then sprinting 1/3. Do this for several laps. This really builds your endurance AND will keep you lean and mean!
- i am currently 9% body fat as a kickboxer i find it better to stay lean and fast anything above 5% is not dangerous although often frowned upon go below 5% and you risk screwing up the fat levels in your bone marrow and spinal chord which isnt cool lol
