Are scales with body fat percentage worth the extra money?

I've recently started a new fitness regimen, and I want a good digital scale to track my weight. I've seen some that also claim to be able to accurately measure BFP. I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with these scales, and can tell me if the BFP reported is accurate and precise enough to warrant the extra money. If it's just a gimmick then I'll just get a good scale and have my gym do a caliper test every so often. Thanks.

  1. I think that it's nice to have the BFP. Jenny Craig centers sell them and they are not that expensive.
  2. They really aren't that much more these days. You can get tehm in wal-mart cheap. Are they worth it? hmm, maybe. hey are less accurate than weight since being dehaydrated throws them off a little but I think the small extra cost is worth it.
  3. I have read, that even under ideal conditions, body fat percentage calculation can vary for 10% or so. Generally, its not a thing that changes each day or too unpredictably - you might need to check it once a while.
  4. the scales are highly inaccuraate. you can buy a cheap caliper for under 20 dollars at gnc or your local vitamin store. i recommend the accu-measure. its woorth the money in my opinion
  5. It is worth it. There are different types with a varying cost but I think the moderate priced scales are worth it. It is not the most accurate way to get true bodyfat % but if you use the same scale all the time you will at least be able to see movement and progress if you are looking to reduce body fat. I had my BF % tested at a gym and then used my scale and the % was very close. Good Question! Keith FreeFitCoach dot com
  6. I guess i am old fashion, but if I can grab fat any place in my body, I know I am not at my Ideal body weight... ...However, getting your cholesterol checked is probably your best bet to which most pharmacies do for a minimal fee. Good luck with your exercise/diet regimen...:)
