How seriously does the British Army take your BMI (Body Mass Index)?
I'm 5'11 (179cms) and weigh a wopping 98kgs, (15.5 stone) and although I could loose a small amount of weight I am not fat. Apart from this my fitness is ok, with my 1.5 Mile run at under 9mins 30. I have Selection next week and am concerned that the Army might take the BMI into account even though my fitness is up to scratch?

- If the British Army is anything like the Australian army, they will take your BMI into account. I did your BMI on the Aussie BMI calculator BMI 30 to 33. You fall within the acceptable range for entry however, your body fat percentage will also be calculated and recorded. That is pretty good, if you were to lose just 1kg you would fall within the healthy range wehre they wont record your BMI and test you later. You have the same BMI as me, and mine is fine
- If you can complete the Standard Fitness Tests within the minimum times, then they shouldn't have a problem. If the guy in the recruiting office didn't say you were too 'fat' then you should be fine... if you pass the tests.
- i dont think they take any thing serious, once a soldier is wounded they dont care, look at the atomic testing, gulf war syndrome the list is endless, take care but dont say you werent warned
- No it should be fine as long as you pass the tests, and if the recruiter didnt say anything to you it'll be grand. Hey they need big lads like you to carry the GPMG. oh and that rebel guy is a complete moron.
- During the late 70's - early 80's I was responsible for the screening of all army recruits in England and Wales (Scotland had their own selection outfit) You certainly wouldn't have been failed then as long as you passed the recruit fitness tests and no possible sinister cause of your BMI was indicated. During your recruit training you'd probably lose weight and as long as you demonstrated the right attitude you'd be fine. Good luck.
